Tiny Eden Demo & Save File Compatibility

The rule

Start a new game. The developer reply is unambiguous:

Please start a new game, the save game from demo (or playtest) is a bug (it should not have let you continue). Continuing is heavily bugged.

The launch announcement carries the same warning: do not continue from a demo save, they will not work or will crash.

What Update #1 changed

Update #1 shipped on launch day and formalised the cut-off:

  • Save files from versions prior to 0.10.0 are no longer supported and will no longer appear in the Load Game menu.
  • Save files from 0.10.x versions remain compatible with each other.

So if an old save has vanished from your menu, that is intended behaviour rather than data loss on your side.

Uninstall the demo

This is more than housekeeping. The retail unit not selling anything was one of the biggest launch bugs, and Bajka Games published a workaround built around the demo still being installed:

  1. Save, then close the game.
  2. If you have the demo installed, uninstall it.
  3. Go back into the game.

They added that players who had not hit the bug at all often mentioned they had uninstalled the demo before starting. Two separate systems, one root cause — leftover demo data is worth clearing before you start a serious run.

Is the demo safe to download?

Yes, in the ordinary sense: it is distributed through Steam by the publisher, Digital Vortex Entertainment, the same channel as the full game. The demo is a genuine Steam demo rather than a third-party download, and the only caution attached to it is the save-compatibility one above.

If a search brought you here looking for a repack or torrent, this site does not cover those — beyond noting that a build obtained that way will not receive Update #1 or any of the fixes it carries, which is precisely the version most likely to reproduce the bugs on the known issues page.

What the demo contained

The demo built on the earlier playtest and added significantly more content: more plant varieties, new story-driven quests, an open trading post, new crafting recipes, and new skills and progression options. The playtest before it was described by the studio as a full redesign — essentially a 2.0 of the earlier concept — with progress resetting after major updates.

Steam Deck and the demo

The demo post is one of the three official statements that disagree about Deck support. It said the demo does not officially support the Steam Deck, that it might work anyway, and that no Deck optimisations had been made. The May developer FAQ answered the same question with a flat “Yes”. The platforms page lays out all three statements with their dates.
