Tiny Eden Beginner Guide: Your First Day
The three things nobody tells you
Tiny Eden opens gently and then quietly withholds three facts that cost new gardeners their first in-game week.
1. The trowel is not optional
There is no default way to remove a plant. When your first crop wilts — and it will, because early pots have no climate control — you cannot dig it out, cannot re-use the pot, and cannot re-mix the soil until you have bought a trowel from the shop. This produced four separate “how do I remove a dying plant” threads on the Steam board within twelve hours of launch. Buy it early. Aim at the plant or the soil, not the rim of the planter, and hold the left mouse button.
2. Quest planters are gold-highlighted
The early “plant three strawberries” objective will not tick over if you sow into ordinary pots. The game highlights the specific planters it wants in gold, and the interaction is a left click. A player who lost time to this posted the fix themselves: “you need to do it to the gold highlighted planters, not just any planter.”
3. Raw crops do not sell
In version 1.0 the only sellable item is a cooked dish. The developer FAQ is explicit about it and describes raw crops and seedlings as something they are open to adding later. So the loop is always grow, harvest, cook, sell — cooking is not a side system you can postpone.
What the first hour should look like
- Follow the opening quests until the shop is available.
- Buy the trowel. Skip the cooling fan, whatever it promises — it will not clip onto any planter you own yet.
- Plant into the gold-highlighted pots when a quest asks for a specific crop.
- Rescue the cat from the roof. It is the single most-unlocked achievement in the game at 82.5%, which tells you how early it lands, and it is the best mood-setter the opening has.
- Earn 100 coins by any means. That is what actually triggers the shop-key mail in the retail chain — a Russian-language reply on the “Keys to retail unit” thread spelled it out when the mail appeared to be missing.
Time works at 60:1
One real second is one in-game minute. That matters more than it sounds: several quests are time-gated to a window rather than a day. The database hand-off on the rooftop, for example, only accepts delivery between 21:00 and 23:00, and if you miss it you are waiting out a full in-game day.
There is no failure state to race against, though. The FAQ is clear that there is no game over and no time pressure — you can run out of money, and recovering is easy.
What to look at next
- How to remove dead and wilting plants — the trowel method in full
- Soil components — the seven-ingredient mix system that decides everything else
- Planters and add-on rules — why your grow light will not attach yet
- Making money and reputation — the loop that unlocks recipes and seeds
